Description
Map of the Orinoco River. 18th-century map of the Orinoco River in northern South America in what is now Venezuela and Colombia. This map was published in 'El Orinoco Ilustrado' (1741, The Orinoco illustrated) by Jesuit priest Jose Gumilla (1686-1750, named at bottom) who lived in the area for 35 years. The Orinoco drainage basin covers 880,000 square kilometres. The title of this map (top right) translates as: 'Map of the provinces and missions of the Society of Jesus in the kingdom of New Granada'. The equator runs across lower centre. Cities shown here include Cartagena (Colombia), Pamplona (Colombia), and Ciudad Guayana (Venezuela).
