Description
Map of Cuba. 19th-century map of the island of Cuba, produced in 1820 by French cartographer Pierre Lapie based on the work of German geographer and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). The text (top right and top left) gives details of how the map was compiled based on astronomical observations by Spanish navigators. The inset at bottom left shows the city and harbour of Havana. Prominent marine features include the Caribbean Sea ('Mer des Antilles'), the Great Bahama Bank ('Grand Banc de Bahama'), and the Old Bahama Channel ('Vieux Canal de Bahama'). This French map uses the Prime Meridian based in Paris.
