Description
Human tongue. Light micrograph of section through the tongue. The body of the tongue (lower half of the image) consists of interwoven muscle fibres (pink longitudinal, red cross section) and mucous glands (poorly stained, white circles, centre left). Above the body of the tongue is the connective tissue of the lamina propria (pale pink horizontal band). The surface epithelium (at top, granular) consists of filiform papillae (small, spiky projections). Filiform papillae are heavily keratinised and have a sensory and tactile function. Magnification : x12 at 6 x 7 cm.
