Description
Taste buds. Light micrograph of a section through taste buds. Taste buds are mostly located on the papillae on the tongue but are also scattered on the palate, pharynx and epiglottis. The taste buds (centre, rounded) are situated in an epithelial layer (dark pink). They open at the surface via the taste pore (seen clearly at top of right taste bud). Taste buds contain 20-30 long spindle shaped cells, the nuclei of which can be seen (pale pink, rounded). Four types of taste are recognised: sweet, bitter, acid and salt. Although each is recognised on a different part of the tongue the taste buds are structurally the same in each region. Magnification unknown.
