Description
Lionel Penrose (1898-1972, left), British psychiatrist, medical geneticist and mathematician, with his wife Margaret Leathes (died 1928) and a child. Penrose is best known for his pioneering work on the genetics of 'mental retardation'. He was a central figure in British medical genetics after World War II and received a number of awards and honours. He developed the Penrose Method for apportioning seats in a global assembly based on the square root of each nation's population. Photographed circa 1954-1955.
