Description
Black ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata variegata) in a tree. This animal is endemic to the east coast rainforests of Madagascar where it spends most of its time high in the canopy. It is the largest of the true lemurs with its body growing up to 55 centimetres in length and a tail that can reach 60 centimetres in length. It mainly feeds on fruit, but will also take nectar, seeds and leaves. It is a social animal living in matriarchal groups of up to 30 individuals. It is highly territorial, with the females, the larger of the sexes, taking the more active role in warding off invaders. Photographed in Madagascar.
