Description
Japanese Kamikaze attack on USS Missouri View of a Japanese A6M Zero Kamikaze plane about to hit the side of the USS Missouri (BB-63), while operating off Okinawa, Japan during the closing stages of World War II. The plane hit the ship's side below the main deck, causing minor damage and no casualties on board the battleship. Kamikaze attacks were suicide attacks carried out by Japanese pilots flying specially adapted aircraft carrying a combination of explosives, bombs, torpedoes and full fuel tanks. They were designed to destroy warships more effectively than was possible with conventional attacks. Photographed on 11th April 1945.
