Description
Illustration of the Institution of Electrical Engineers building in Savoy Place, London, during the 1930's. Originally formed as the Society of Telephone Engineers in 1871, by 1880, with the growth in electrical activity and technology and the rapid increase in membership the name of the Society was changed to the Institution of Electrical Engineers. In 1909 it acquired the existing Savoy Place building and carried out various alterations to accommodate numerous activities. In 1923 the British Broadcasting Corporation Limited was able to set up the Savoy Hill House broadcasting and recording studios there. The Savoy Place building is currently the headquarters for the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers,
