Description
Indian Ocean, seafloor map. North is at top. Africa is at left, with India and southern Asia at top, the Malay Archipelago at upper right, and Australia at lower right. The seabed depth varies from shallow (light blue) on the continental shelves, to deep (dark blue) in the ocean basins. The main features are a series of mid-ocean ridges. This is where new seafloor is created, pushing the continents apart in a process called seafloor spreading. At upper right, the dark line is a subduction zone where seafloor is destroyed. The topography of the ocean basins has been depicted using ETOPO2-2 (Earth Topography) satellite altimetry data. The land areas use data from the Blue Marble satellite mosaic.
