Description
US pathologist Simon Flexner (1863-1946) and Professor Neufeld in a laboratory. Flexner was the first director (1901-1935) of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation. He worked on experimental epidemiology and venoms, poliomyelitis, serum treatment of cerebrospinal meningitis, and on isolating a bacillus of dysentery (Shigella dysenteriae). The bacterium Shigella flexneri was named in his honour. Photographed in 1927.
