Flavius Belisarius at Constantinople. 1869 illustration of general Flavius Belisarius (500-565) at Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey. Belisarius was a general of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) and was instrumental in Emperor Justinian's (Justinian the Great) ambitious project of reconquering much of the Mediterranean territory of the former Western Roman Empire. He was the highest-ranking military officer in the Imperial capital of Constantinople.
