Description
Scientific balloon. Engraving of researchers in a scientific balloon used in high-altitude research, before take-off. This flight, on 17 August 1852, lasted 2 hours 51 minutes, reaching an altitude of 5852 metres and covering a distance of 40 kilometres. At the maximum height, air was sucked into vacuum tubes for later analysis and the temperature was measured as being -14 degrees Celsius. The researchers noted the height of clouds and that it was not difficult to breathe. The flight started from Vauxhall Gardens in London, UK. The aviators were: Green (at right), the aviator; Welsh and Nicklin, the experiment- alists; Adie, the maker of the instruments. Other positional information not known.
