Description
19th century illustration showing James Scott (1649-1685), the first duke of Monmouth, before being executed at Tower Hill, London, UK, on the 15th of July 1685. An illegitimate son of Charles II (1630-1685), he claimed to be the rightful heir to the throne and attempted to displace James II in the Monmouth Rebellion. He was captured after his army was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor and was executed for treason. Artwork by M. Marckl published in the 1845 book Les prisons de l'Europe by Jules Alboise and Auguste Maquet.
