Description
Duke of Chartres balloon flight. 19th-century illustration of the near-disastrous balloon ascent at Saint-Cloud by the Duke of Chartres and the Robert brothers on 15 July 1784. In 18th-century France balloon flights were a form of public entertainment. On this flight, the French brothers Anne-Jean Robert and Nicolas-Louis Robert flew for 45 minutes from Saint-Cloud to Meudon with M. Collin-Hullin and Louis Philippe II, the Duke of Chartres. Artwork from 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
