Description
Diesel engine cylinder. Artwork of the internal details of the combustion cycle in an internal combustion engine cylinder, in this case a four-stroke diesel engine. The piston in the cylinder is moved up and down by the combustion (burning) of fuel. The intake valve (far left) allows fuel and air into the cylinder. The the fuel/air mixture is compressed (centre left) and ignited by the compression (centre right). The expanding gases push the piston downwards. The exhaust valve (far right) opens to allow waste gases out. A crankshaft (bottom) turns the linear motion into rotary motion. Petrol engines use a spark plug, rather than compression, to trigger combustion.
