Description
Devil's Marbles (Karlu Karlu). These rock formations are found in Australia's Northern Territory. They are made of granite, and their rounded shapes have been formed by spheroidal weathering. This is a combination of temperature-induced mechanical weathering (which cracks the rocks) and chemical weathering (by which flakes of rock peel off the surface). This site is sacred to the local Aboriginal people. They consider the boulders to be the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent, one of the main spirits in the Aboriginal worldview known as the Dreamtime.
