Description
Death of Cardinal Wolsey (1473-1530). 1886 illustration from an engraving by US painter George Cope depicting the death of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in 1848. Wolsey was an English churchman, statesman and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. During the reign of Henry VIII he had become the controlling figure in virtually all matters of state and extremely powerful within the Church, as Archbishop of York. He later became Lord Chancellor, the King's chief adviser, but was stripped of his government titles in 1529 after failing to negotiate the annulment of Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon. He was accused of treason and ordered to London but fell ill and died on the journey on 29th November 1530.
