Description
Armoured ship. Engraving of a cut-away view of an armoured ship of the 19th century, revealing the ship's cannons inside. These armoured ships, or ironclads, used steel plates up to 60cm (2 feet) thick to protect themselves from the weapons of other ships. Naval guns fired shells that were up to 40cm (16 inches) in diameter. Ships such as these were used by the European nations to protect their global empires. Engraving of the British frigate HMS Alexandra.
