Description
Moon phases. Composite time-lapse image of the phases of the Moon, as seen from Earth during a lunar (synodic) month, around the Earth & super- imposed on a starfield. The phases are (anti- clockwise from bottom) new moon; waxing crescent; first quarter; waning gibbous; full moon; waxing gibbous; last quarter; and waning crescent. The lunar phases occur because the Moon does not produce light, but reflects sunlight. As it trav- els on its 29.53-day orbit, parts of the Moon's surface which are visible from Earth become shad- owed by the Moon itself. New Moons occur when the Moon lies between the Earth and Sun, & full moons occur when the Moon is furthest from the Sun.
