Description
Illustration of the retorts at the Great Gas Light Establishment, Brick Lane, London, UK. This plant converted coal into 'town gas' for domestic use and street lighting. The gas was produced by the destructive distillation of coal, where it is heated in the absence of air. It is comprised mainly of methane, hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Published in 1837.
