Description
Cardiac muscle tissue, illustration. Found in the heart, this tissue is made up of cardiac muscle cells (cardiomyocytes). A high abundance of mitochondria power the constant beating of the heart. The cell nuclei (yellow) are shown, as are the vertical striations of contractile filament proteins (grey bands) forming the myofibrils. Adjacent cardiac muscle cells are connected by intercalated discs. For a set of artworks showing the three muscle types, see images C023/8598 to C023/8600.
