Description
Whale bone tissue. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through bone from a whale. This is a close-up of the Haversian systems of compact bone. Each system has circular lamellae. The bone matrix consists of collagen fibres impregnated with mostly calcium mineral salts. The Haversian canals carry veins, arteries and lymph vessels (not seen). The gaps between the circles form the interstitial system. Magnification: x36 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
