Description
Salivary gland tissue, light micrograph. In humans there are three sets of paired salivary glands, one set below the tongue, one set by the lower jaw bones, and one set in front of the ears. They are exocrine glands, secreting saliva and mucus to help break down food in the mouth. The secretions are from cluster of cells called acini (several seen here, white). The clusters are centred around a duct, and the ducts join up and exit into the mouth.
