Description
Melanosis coli. Light micrograph of a section through the colon (large intestine) showing melanosis coli (brown patches). This is a pigmentation disorder in the wall of the colon, caused by prolonged use of laxative medication. It is a benign (harmless) condition with no direct link to disease. The name 'melanosis' is a misnomer, as the dark pigmentation is not caused by melanin, but by lipofuscin. Alcian Blue stain.
