Description
Lung tissue. Light micrograph of a section through a mammalian lung. The tissue has been injected with a red dye to show the blood vessels. Small arterioles (solid red) and capillaries (dark red) are seen here. The capillaries are part of the network on the outside of the alveoli, to enable the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and the blood. The larger, unstained, tubes are the bronchioles, the tubes branching from the bronchi and narrowing in size down to the alveoli. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
