Description
Plate V, page 582, DeSerc drawn, Chevillet engraved. Supplement of Volume IV of L'Histoire Naturelle" (servant de suite a l'histoire naturelle de l'homme). Published by M. le Comte de Buffon 1777 at 'L'imprimerie Royale, Paris. Buffon reports that Judith and Helene were born in Tzoni, Hungary 26 Oct 1701. From age seven they travelled widely as curiosities, to Holland, England, France, Italy and Russia. They died 23rd February 1723. Buffon notes that their characters were very different - Judith is described as irritable and dull, Helene clever, pretty and fun. They shared one anus, but otherwise organs seemed separate. Buffon reports that one could have fever and the other be healthy, but when Judith was three minutes from death due to a fever, Helene began to suffer greatly and they died at nearly the same time."
