Description
British tank 'Lusitania' at Arras, France, during the First World War (1914-1918). HMLS (His Majesty's Landship) 'Lusitania' was named after the Cunard ocean liner RMS Lusitania, which had been sunk by the Germans earlier in the war. Tanks were a new development, being first used on the battlefield in September 1916. This Mark II tank (C47) was operated by a crew commanded by Lieutenant C. F. Webber. It took part in the attack of 9-10 April 1917 by VI Corps during the First Battle of the Scarpe (part of the wider Second Battle of Arras). After more than 12 hours of combat, it broke down and was later destroyed after the crew had safely retreated. From the photographic section of the Imperial War Museum.
