Description
Boeing 757 jet aircraft fuel efficiency research. Test flight by a modified Boeing 757 jet aircraft to study the effects of technology used to reduce fuel consumption. Known as the ecoDemonstrator, and operated by NASA, there were two technologies tested. The first was Active Flow Control Enhanced Vertical Tail Flight Experiment, where 31 small devices (sweeping jet actuators) blew air on the vertical tail to reduce drag. The second technology tested (Insect Accretion and Mitigation) was the use of non-stick coatings to help repel insects from the leading edge of the wings and reduce the drag generated. This research project began in 2015.
