Description
Base of a Herschel telescope, artwork. This is the 'small' 20-foot telescope, and is one of over 400 telescopes designed by the German-born British astronomer William Herschel (1738-1822). The telescope is seen in full in R102/173. This detail of the base shows how the telescope could be rotated on its base to point in the desired direction. The other end of the telescope was supported by a rope and pulley system. The bottom end of the tube could be opened for inspection and maintenance, as here, but observations were made from the other end of the tube, which was 20 feet (6 metres) long. Herschel's discoveries included Uranus (1781) and several moons of Saturn and Uranus.
