Description
Australian aborigines, 18th century. This artwork shows a group of Australian aborigines in canoes led by Bennelong (left, here called Ban nel lang) meeting New South Wales colonists. This meeting on 17 September 1790 was a reconcilation after the colony's governor Arthur Phillip had been wounded in an earlier meeting at Manly Beach on 7 September 1790. Bennelong, from the Eora people, would later travel to England. This item, an unattributed work by a Port Jackson painter, is part of the Watling Collection at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
