Description
Moon phases. Artwork showing some of the phases of the Moon as seen from the Earth. Half of the lunar month is shown here from the full Moon (bottom left) to the new Moon (bottom right). The lunar month, from a full Moon to the following one, lasts 27.3 days and coincides with the Moon's period of revolution along its own axis; it is for this reason that the Moon keeps the same face turned towards the Earth. The Moon, the only natural satellite of the Earth, has a diameter of 3476km and lies at a mean distance of 384,000km from the Earth.
