Description
Arctic regions, 1650s. 17th-century map of the Arctic regions, titled in Latin: Nova et accurata Poli Arctici: et terrarum circum iacentium descriptio. The water colors and illumination with gold and silver is ascribed to Dirck Jansz van Santen. The regions shown include North America (left), Greenland (lower left), and northern Russia and Europe (right and lower right). The text label 'incognita' is at upper centre. At the time, the far northern reaches of the Arctic (centre) were unexplored and unknown, along with the far eastern regions of Asia and the far western regions of North America. This map, by Dutch cartographer Jan Janssonius (1588-1664), was published in Amsterdam in the 1650s.
