Anatomy lesson by Velpeau, 1864. French surgical anatomist Alfred Armand Louis Velpeau (centre, 1795-1867) demonstrating human anatomy to artists and observers. Velpeau, the leading surgeon in Paris, was an admired teacher and professor of clinical surgery at the university hospital. Others present are Armand Charnay, Henri Liouville, Pierre Desfosses, Armand Sylvestre, and Augustin Feyen-Perrin. This lithograph is by Louis-Eugene Pirodon. The original artwork on which it is based, 'La Lecon d'anatomie de Velpeau a la Charite' (1864) by Augustin Feyen-Perrin (1826-1888), is held in the Museum of Fine Arts of Tours, France.
