Description
ALMA Array Operations Site (AOS). ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas being prepared at the Operations Support Facility (OSF, 2900 metres elevation) and then installed here at the AOS (5000 metres elevation) on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. These are mostly 12-metre antennas, but the first 7-metre antenna to be installed is at centre right. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. Observations began in 2011. Photographed on 28 August 2011.
