Description
Airship 'Le Pax' in flight. Photographic illustration of the French hydrogen-filled airship 'Le Pax' in flight, flown by its Brazilian designer Augusto Severo de Albuquerque Maranhao (1864-1902) and his French mechanic Georges Sache (1876-1902). After its launch on 12 May 1902, at an altitude of 400 metres over Paris, the oil motors cut out and the airship exploded, killing both men. Two streets in Paris were named after the dead aeronauts, and a marble plaque marks the site. Published in 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
