Description
Fibroblast cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a mammalian fibroblast culture cell derived from normal human foreskin. Fibroblast cells are actively dividing cells that develop into connective tissue in the body. Unlike many types of mammalian cell they can be kept alive and made to multiply in the laboratory. They are often used to study how genes control growth and multiplication. Such research could shed light on what makes cells multiply uncontrollably in cancer. Magnification: x3000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Specimen courtesy of Professor Greg Towers, University College London, UK.
