Description
Stomata of a horsetail leaf (Equisetum sp), scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The leaf is reduced to a scale on the joint of the stem. Stomata (singular = stoma) are tiny openings in the epidermis of a plant that are surrounded by pairs of crescent-shaped cells, called guard cells, that facilitate gas exchange. Magnification: x345 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
