Description
Map of Templo Mayor, the Great Temple in the Sacred Precinct of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the historic Aztec Empire in Mexico. This temple was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, god of war, and Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture and a spire in the centre to Quetzalcoatl in his form as the wind god, Ehecatl. The Great Temple measured approximately 100 by 80 metres at its base and dominated the Sacred Precinct. Construction of the first temple began sometime after 1325. It was rebuilt six times, and was finally destroyed by the Spanish invaders in 1521. A cathedral was built on the site.
