Description
Comet of 1664-5. Historical illustration of the comet that was seen in the skies over Europe in November 1664. By December (left) this was one of the brightest comets of the time, seen all across Europe and reported in many publications. It reappeared (right) in late December 1664 and January 1665 and was last seen in March 1665. Modern astronomers have designated the 1664-5 comet as C/1664 W1. This artwork is from the title page (see image C023/0823) of 'Cometologiae libri tres' (1664) by German astronomer Friedrich Muller (1630-1667). This book was published in Giessen, Germany.
