Description
The Atlantic Telegraph (1865). Document illustrating the history of telegraphy, and the submarine cables laid across the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean in the 1850s and 1860s (see C026/8924). In the Atlantic, both the failed 1858 cable and the successful 1866 cable were laid from Ireland to Newfoundland. The northern proposal of Shaffner and the southern French proposal are also shown. The 1866 cable was laid by the SS Great Eastern (centre). Existing cables are listed and cable types illustrated, with a telegraph and a Morse code table, plus a map of proposed global ocean and land telegraph routes. Published by George Washington Bacon (1830-1921).
