Description
Spanish New World atlas title page. This booklet 'Descripcion de las Indias Ocidentales' (Description of the West Indies, 1601) accompanied a history of the Spanish conquest of the New World. The engraved border shows portraits of various Mexican gods, temples and rulers. Mythical sea creatures are at top. The author is named as Spanish historian Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (1549-1626), described as the 'greatest chronicler of the Indies'. His portrait is given at lower left. The coat of arms of Castile and Leon is at lower centre. Published in Madrid. For the title page of a Dutch 1622 edition of this work, see image C028/4369.
