Description
Septic wounds hospital ward. Patients being treated for infected wounds in a specialised bath tub hospital ward in the First World War. These patients are being treated at the South African Hospital built in 1916 in Richmond Park, London, UK. The hospital had a special bath ward with six continuous baths designed for the treatment of patients with severe wounds. Continuous baths, first developed in 1861, are a form of hydrotherapy that suspended the patient in warm water that was continuously replaced. In 1918, this hospital merged with the Richmond Military Hospital to become the South African Military Hospital. The hospital closed in 1921 and was demolished in 1925.
