Description
Lung tissue. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a mammalian lung. The four large pink rings are bronchi. These have outer walls supported by cartilaginous rings, and an internal lining of a folded ciliated epithelium with mucus cells. The red rings are veins and arteries, with the arteries having thicker walls than the veins. The rest of the tissue is made up of air sacs (alveoli). The alveoli have capillary networks on the outer surfaces to enable the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and the blood. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
