Description
Early Ordnance Survey work. Title page of the account published in London in 1799 of the trigonometrical surveys of England and Wales carried out from 1784 to 1796. These surveys were begun under the direction of the Royal Society (initially published in its journal, Philosophical Transactions), and then continued by a government body, the Board of Ordnance. This would eventually form the basis of the UK national mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey. This is the first volume, printed in London by the Royal geographer. The surveyors are British Army officer and Fellow of the Royal Society William Mudge (1762-1820) and Isaac Dalby (1744-1824).
