Description
Drake's attack on Saint Augustine. 16th-century illustration of the attack carried out on the Spanish settlement of Saint Augustine (now part of Florida, USA) on 28-29 May 1586 by a fleet led by English corsair Sir Francis Drake. The English forces rowed ashore in pinnaces and destroyed the settlement which housed 150 soldiers and included a town house, watchtower and church. This attack took place during Drake's 1585-6 voyage to the West Indies, and was part of the Anglo-Spanish War. This image is cropped from C023/8620, a larger depiction of the attack published in 1589 by Italian cartographer Giovanni Battista Boazio.
