1923 Great Kanto earthquake. Landscape of destroyed buildings in Tokyo, Japan, following the Great Kanto earthquake of 1 September 1923. This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale. It caused immense destruction in Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, and the surrounding regions. It is thought to have caused over 142,000 deaths. Many buildings collapsed and the ruins were then engulfed by large fires that broke out in the area following the earthquake. This view was obtained from the top of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, the only hotel in the earthquake district that survived.
