Description
One of the wine press installations at the acropolis of Ancient Asine, Greece. Asine was a rich agricultural area in Hellenistic and Roman times and continues to this day. The earliest evidence of grape vine cultivation and winemaking dates back 7, 000 years. The image shows a vat for pressing the grapes next to a circular tank set beneath the stone floor for storing and fermenting the pressed juice. Addition equipment including a screw press would have been positioned above the stone base, evidenced by a set of post-holes in the installation.
