Description
Ancient Greek warrior, 19th-century artwork. This is a hoplite, the term for a citizen-soldier from Ancient Greece, usually armed with a spear and shield. The city states of Ancient Greece (such as Sparta and Athens) based their armies on military training, with all male citizens undertaking several years of military service. This system dates to the archaic period (8th to 5th centuries BC). Hoplites provided their own armour and weapons, with this one having a plumed helmet, bronze breastplate, and leg greaves. The spear (dory) was over 2 metres long. The round shield is called a hoplon. This woodcut dates from 1880.
