Ancient Greek clinic. Coloured vase painting showing an ancient Greek clinic. The physician (sitting at centre) is about to bleed a patient. Blood will collect in the bowl from an incision in the man's arm. The ancient Greeks thought that illnesses were the result of an imbalance in the four humours (bodily fluids). For example high blood pressure was due to too much blood. Consequently the treatment involved draining excess blood through a cut. Other bandaged patients are seen. At centre left is a dwarf with the physical characteristics of achondroplasia, a disease in which the bones, especially of the legs and arms, do not grow to their correct length.
