Description
The Greek Islands, seen from space. This view of the Aegean Sea was taken by the crew of Shuttle Mission STS-58 of 18 October to 1 November 1993. In the foreground is the island of Crete. In the upper part of the frame is Turkey. Between these two are the Dodecanese Islands (nearest the Turkish coast) and the Cyclades (centre left), all popular holiday destinations. At centre right is the island of Rhodes. Left of the clouds near centre is an arc-shaped island, Thira (also called Santorini). The explosion of a massive volcano once on the island in 1450 BC is thought to have destroyed the ancient Minoan civilisation on the northern shores of Crete.
